Stay Safe This Winter!
Winter means holidays and good times, but also brings a whole set of cold-weather hazards and safety issues. Stay safe this winter by taking a few commonsense precautions for your health and your home.
Reduce the Chance of Slips and Falls
Though not common occurrences in our part of the country, ice and snow can create treacherous conditions when walking outside. Texans may need a reminder to tread carefully and to spread salt or kitty litter on sidewalks and driveways when ice is present. Slipping outside can possibly lead to head injuries with long-lasting consequences. When decorating your house for the holidays, make sure to only use a ladder on level ground and have someone hold it steady for you. Better yet, think about hiring a professional to install lights on the eaves or wreaths on upstairs windows. Broken bones from a ladder fall would put a major damper on your holiday celebrations!
Reduce the Chance of Fire
From the furnace and fireplace to electric holiday decor and candles around the house, wintertime has an abundance of additional fire hazards. Always make fire safety a top priority to prevent disaster from striking. Have your heater and fireplace serviced and cleaned before using them for the first time each season. Unplug holiday lights and decor when not in use or when you are not home. Never leave candles burning after you leave the room. Nothing flammable should be near any open flames. Also make sure to keep an eye on pets and children to make sure they keep a distance as well. And always have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to alert you of any problems as soon as they start.
Reduce the Chance of a Leak
Frozen pipes that burst and send water into your home are a real possibility during extremely cold weather. Make sure to wrap any exposed pipes and even drain the lines before you go out of town. Leak detectors installed in various vulnerable spots in your home, like attics, bathrooms and laundry rooms (or near your water heater) are a great way to prevent water damage from going undetected. The longer water is able to stay in your home, the more damage is possible.
