Monitor Proactively with Environmental Sensors

Most people are aware of the common types of environmental sensors like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.  These register the presence of either smoke or CO. They then alert you so you can take action to stay safe.  But did you know there are other environmental sensors you can have as well?  And that they can create alerts and audibly notify you before too much damage occurs.

The Heat is On

Many homes have heat detectors to complement their other fire alarm devices.  Since you can’t have a smoke detector in certain places where there might be naturally occurring smoke (from an exhaust or cooking), heat detectors are used instead. You can have them in kitchens, garages, attics, near a fireplace and in laundry rooms.

Temperature sensors can be used to manage the behavior of your air conditioning unit.  Most air conditioners operate based on the temperature reading for the room where the thermostat is located.  If some rooms in the house are warmer or you want to ensure a certain temperature in specific rooms, you can leverage these sensors.  The sensor in each room can communicate with the thermostat. This provides a better reading of the overall temperature in the house.  You can also set the desired temperature for auto on/off on your system based on a specific room.  If it’s more important to have the bedrooms at 70 degrees at night, use a sensor to feed their temperature to the thermostat. Then it will keep the system on until 70 degrees is maintained in those rooms.

Freeze Out

Temperature sensors can also be used to determine freezing conditions. With the sensors, you will know when to worry about protecting your pipes during the winter. And they can be used in your refrigerator or freezer to alert you if the right temperature isn’t being maintained. You will become aware of an issue before your food can spoil. Businesses that rely on cold storage or have large walk-in freezers full of food can definitely benefit from this kind of environmental sensor.

Leaks and Floods

Water can do a lot of damage to a home, no matter what the source of it. It can comes in from the outside during flooding or because of roof damage or from an internal issue. You want to know as soon as possible if there is water where it shouldn’t be!

Leak detectors have sensors on the bottom that react as soon as they come into contact with water.  An alarm will sound and the system will send alerts to notify you of the presence of water where it is not normally expected. Leak detectors are helpful in the laundry room, bathrooms, under sinks and anywhere that you might have a burst pipe or where water might flow in to the house.
