Stay Safe on New Year's Eve

Stay Safe on New Year’s Eve!

New Year’s Eve parties are a fun way to wrap up the holiday season and ring in the new year. The various ways we celebrate can create safety issues, so keep in mind the following tips to stay safe on New Year’s Eve.

Fireworks Safety

Playing with fire can create dangerous situations. Always keep in mind these safety tips, especially when children or pets are around.

  • Use fireworks and sparklers outside and keep a water bucket nearby in case something catches on fire.
  • Never light more than one firework at a time. If something goes wrong, you want to be able to get to the problem quickly. Having additional fireworks going off at the same time makes it difficult to deal with a problem.
  • Even little sparklers can catch hair, clothing and fabrics on fire. Take special care to supervise children and warn them not to drop them or let the flame get too close to their fingers!
  • Consider non-flammable alternatives to avoid these safety issues, like party poppers, bubbles, confetti eggs, silly string or glow sticks.

Navigate the Roads

New Year’s Eve celebrations often involve champagne toasts and other fun cocktails (sometimes many!) This leads to an increase in cars on the road with tipsy or drunk drivers. Make a plan to avoid the issue.

  • Volunteer to host a gathering to avoid being on the roads. Offer the guestroom, foldout couch or an air mattress to your guests so they can do the same.
  • Make sure your guests have a ride home, whether a designated driver, taxi or a rideshare app like Uber or Lyft.
  • If you’re the guest, staying at the party location for the night is a great idea. Or choose a nearby hotel with a shuttle service.

Protect Your Home

With holiday travel in full swing on New Year’s Eve, empty homes are a tempting target for would-be thieves. Market your home as safe and secure using the following tips.

  • Schedule automatic lighting to give the illusion that someone is home. Thieves target empty homes to make it easier to gain entry and prevent being caught.
  • Make sure to have a security company sign posted by each entrance. Any additional barrier to gain entry might lessen the chance for a break-in.
  • Visible security cameras can also be a deterrent and having them monitored is additional peace of mind that your home is secure from intruders.
