Smart Tips for Back-To-School Safety

It may be hard to believe that summer is winding down and kids are already returning to school this week. After a few months off, now is a great time to remind your children about smart tips for back-to-school safety. We all want healthy and happy kids as the new year kicks off!

  1. Transportation Safety:

    • Teach children proper road safety, including looking both ways before crossing the street, using designated crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.
    • If your child bikes to school, ensure they wear a helmet and follow cycling safety rules.
    • If your child takes the bus, remind them to stand a safe distance away from the curb while waiting and to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching.
  2. Cyber Safety:

    • Educate children about online safety, including avoiding sharing personal information, being cautious with social media and recognizing online predators.
    • Encourage responsible use of digital devices and set limits on screen time.
  3. Food Allergies:

    • If your child has food allergies, inform the school staff and teachers. Make sure they have an action plan in place and are aware of your child’s allergies.
  4. Emergency Preparedness:

    • Ensure that your child knows what to do in case of emergencies such as fires, earthquakes, or lockdowns. Schools often conduct drills for these situations.
  5. Bullying and Peer Pressure:

    • Talk to your child about bullying and how to recognize it They should also know how to seek help if they or someone else is being bullied.
    • Teach them about peer pressure and how to make safe and healthy choices.
  6. Personal Belongings:

    • Choose a backpack for your child carefully; it should have ergonomically designed features to enhance safety and comfort. Ask your children to use both straps when wearing their backpack to evenly distribute the weight on their shoulders. Don’t overstuff a backpack; it should weigh no more than 5% to 10% of your child’s body weight.
  7. Health and Hygiene:

    • Advise your child not to share personal items like ChapStick, drinks, combs or headphones to reduce the risk of spreading infections or lice.
    • Teach proper handwashing techniques to prevent the spread of illnesses.
    • Make sure your child is up to date on vaccinations.

    • During outdoor activities, ensure your child wears sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect against sunburn and UV exposure.
    • Kids should always take a water bottle out to the playground or on the bus.
