Home Office Safety & Security Week

The number of people working from home tripled between 2019 and 2021 to over 27 million, making home office safety a necessary subject for companies and employees alike. Because it’s such an important topic, the first full week of January each year has been named Home Office Safety & Security Week to bring awareness to issues that may arise from working remotely from home.

Personal Safety

As in any work environment, a fire safety plan is imperative. Working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors along with an evacuation route are essential parts of a good plan. Additionally, your desk set-up should be a safe area for you to work. It should be free from tripping hazards like cords or other clutter. Furthermore, to prevent repetitive-task injuries, make sure your chair, desk height, keyboard and monitor are ergonomically situated.

Equipment Safety

Protect and prolong the life of your computer, monitor and other electronics by using surge-protected outlets. Work devices should not be used for personal tasks, and no one but the employee should use them. Your work area and supplies should be kept away from children and pets to avoid possible damage.

Information Security

Keeping your business information safe and secure is a fundamental requirement when working from home. Make sure to back up all of your work electronically to prevent any loss of data if your computer malfunctions. Additionally, robust anti-viral software is vital to prevent malware from infiltrating your system. Data encryption will stop anyone from stealing or deleting crucial information. Hard copy paperwork and files should be stored in a fireproof cabinet, while confidential files should be secured with a locked cabinet.
