Fireworks Safety Awareness Week

The week of June 28-July 4, 2023 is the Third Annual Fireworks Safety Awareness Week declared by Prevent Blindness, a non-profit, voluntary organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight. Playing with fire can create dangerous situations. Always keep  these safety tips in mind, especially when children or pets are around.

  1. Use fireworks and sparklers outside and keep a water bucket nearby in case something catches on fire.
  2. Never light more than one firework at a time. If something goes wrong, you want to be able to get to the problem quickly. Having additional fireworks going off at the same time makes it difficult to deal with a problem.
  3. Create a safety perimeter that all spectators should remain behind.
  4. Dispose of any faulty items that don’t ignite and soak them in water for 5-10 minutes. This prevent injuries from a delayed explosion and permanently renders the firework safe for disposal.
  5. Never hold a firework in your hand while lighting it. Safely secure fireworks on the ground, away from people and animals, and use a stem lighter, such as a grill lighter, to ignite them.
  6. Even little sparklers can catch hair, clothing and fabrics on fire. Take special care to supervise children and warn them not to drop them or let the flame get too close to their fingers!
  7. Wear eye protection, like safety goggles, to prevent ash, flame or debris from injuring your eyes.
  8. Consider non-flammable alternatives to avoid these safety issues, like party poppers, bubbles, confetti eggs, silly string or glow sticks.
