Top Home Safety Resolutions for the New Year

Check out these top home safety resolutions for 2024 to protect your home and loved ones. A few simple precautions can help!

Use a Home Security System:

Consider investing in a home security system or upgrading the one you have. Modern systems can include surveillance cameras, motion detectors, alarms and glass-break monitors that can alert you and authorities to any suspicious activity. Video monitoring services allow for 24-hour protection while you’re away or sleeping. Keep valuables out of sight from windows and invest in a home safe for important documents, jewelry and small electronics.

Think about Fire Safety:

Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home and regularly test them. Also, have a fire escape plan in place for your family.

Be Smart about Locks:

Always lock all doors and windows when you leave home or go to bed. This simple step is the first line of defense against potential intruders. Reinforce your doors with deadbolt locks. Deadbolts provide additional security and are more resistant to forced entry compared to regular locks.

Avoid hiding spare keys in obvious places like under doormats or flower pots. Instead, give spare keys to a trusted neighbor or invest in a smart lock system. These allow you to assign codes to each person you allow in, and for a certain time frame as well. For example, your dog walker’s code only works between certain hours in the afternoon.

Consider Outdoor Issues:

Adequate outdoor lighting can deter burglars. Install motion-activated lights near entrances and pathways and around the perimeter of your home. Strengthen windows with security film or laminated glass. This can make it more difficult for intruders to break through. Keep shrubs and trees near windows and doors well-trimmed. Overgrown foliage provides cover for potential intruders.

Have Social Smarts:

Building a good relationship with your neighbors can create a sense of community watch. Look out for each other and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. In addition, be mindful of what you share on social media. Avoid broadcasting vacation plans or other extended absences that could signal an empty home.

Taking a proactive approach to home security not only provides peace of mind but also creates a safer environment for you and your loved ones. The new year is a great time to check your systems and create some safety resolutions.
