Self Defense Basics

The best defense is a strong offense. That may include exuding strength, situational awareness and being undistracted. Predators are looking for an easy target so doing eveything you can do to convince them that’s not you is essential. A would-be criminal will likely move past the person who is walking with confidence, has their head held high and looks like they will fight back at all costs. Self defense basics of the physical nature can also help generate confidence that you could handle yourself if needed.

With all that said, a victim is never at fault for being on the receiving end of a crime. Doing everything right can still result in being targeted and being able to defend yourself can help you survive. There are some self defense basics that can be used even when the person is bigger than you or ctaches you by surprise.

Self Defense Basics

Campus Safety has a comprehensive article about this, but here are some key elements to keep in mind:

  • Ready Stance – when you sense danger or feel like you are being followed, stabilizing your body helps you be ready to act. Distributing your weight correctly and having your hands available to fight are critical. Read more details here.
  • Palm-Heel Strike – this can be used when you want to catch the aggressor by surprise. Use that as a chance to escape. You hold your hand up with your elbow bent and use the palm of your hand to smash a vulnerable area like the nose.
  • Kick to the Groin – this is exactly what it sounds like. Kick them in the groin area. This is especially useful when the person is tall and you cannot reach their face.
  • Punch with a Fist – raise your arm up high to get as much power as you can and land the punch on the face preferably in the nose or jaw.
  • Elbow strike – the elbow is very hard and can be used effectively. It is especially helpful when you are grabbed from behind. Use it to strike a vulnerable area. If limited mobility use over and over to jab at them in a steady stream.
