Outdoor Festival Safety
The beginning of summer brings outdoor music and art festivals to cities all over the country. These multi-day events are a great way to enjoy the warmer weather, spend time with friends and enjoy a bit of culture. Naturally, any occasion with big crowds in unfamiliar venues will have risks and possible complications. Here are a few things to keep in mind about outdoor festival safety.
Weather
Even if a festival’s locale has mild summer temperatures, which is not what we have in Houston, Texas, the weather can cause safety issues for festival-goers. Sunburns can occur even if the temperature isn’t very hot, so sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are important. Thunderstorms are common in many parts of the country, so keep an eye on the forecast and have a plan to take shelter if lightning is in the area. These storms can also bring heavy rain, so transportation after an event can be dicey. Having a backup plan and staying patient while waiting out a storm or letting flood waters ebb are all good ways to make it through a weather event.
Crowds
Crowded concerts can be a fun place to let go and enjoy your favorite band, but to many people, crowds can seem scary. If the area gets so crowded that you feel like you can’t breathe or move easily, begin to move to a different location, closer to the edges. Keep your arms in front of you, slightly away from your body to protect the area around your chest and face. Do what you can to stay on your feet as well. Wearing non-slip footwear will help.
Health
There are several health risks that are common at large, outdoor festivals. Spending several hours outdoors in warm weather can cause dehydration fairly easily. Make sure to eat a good meal and arrive fully hydrated. Drinking water throughout the day and not consuming too much alcohol are also important tips to remember. Take some hand sanitizer along and make sure to use it before eating or after using a portable toilet. Try to find nutritious food to keep your energy up as well.
