Is your home a target for burglary?

Is Your Home a Target for Burglars?

In the U.S., a home is burglarized every fifteen seconds, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Most homeowners have a false sense of security, thinking they’re immune from burglary and crime. It’s only when they become victims that they realize the truth. So, how do you know if your home is a target for burglars? Here are few ways your home may become a target.

Leaving the Garage Door Open

Do you leave your garage door open while you’re gone? It may seem harmless, but it makes your home a target. Burglars scout for open garage doors, assuming no one is home. Whether you’re away for days or just a quick store run, always close the garage door.

No Security Signs Posted

Show everyone your home has a security system by putting up signs. Burglars prefer to target homes without security. Display signs in your yard and on windows to naturally discourage criminals. Be sure the sign isn’t covered with overgrown shrubbery or blocked in any way.

Full Mailbox

An overflowing mailbox increases the risk of burglary. A full mailbox suggests an empty home. If you’re away for more than two nights, hold your mail at the post office or ask a friend to collect it. If your mailbox isn’t overflowing, burglars won’t assume you’re away.

Just Moved in

Burglars target new homes where security might be overlooked. When you move, prioritize installing an alarm system. If you plan to move into a new home in the near future, contact a residential security company to have an alarm system ready and activated on the first day of your move. Put this task at the top of your to-do list!

Securing your home so you’re not a target for burglars is always crucial. Follow these tips to keep your home safe and secure.
