Holiday Shopping Smarts
Many of us go shopping more during the holidays than at other times of year. Finding that perfect gift for family members and friends can send us chasing that next sale across town. Combine that with an increase in robberies and thefts during the same time frame means we all need to use our Holiday Shopping Smarts to stay safe.
Parking Smarts
Try to park as close to the store entrance as possible, or at least in a well-lit area of the parking lot or garage. Never leave valuables in view inside your car, and don’t let someone see you put anything into the trunk. Try to leave items at home if you can. Keep your keys handy when walking to your car and keep your attention on your surroundings rather than your phone. Thieves like easy targets like someone who is distracted by talking or texting. Try not to carry too many packages or shopping bags, which can also make you a target. Shopping with others can create safety in numbers, and it’s always nice to have help carrying the bags!
Shopping Smarts
Noticing your surroundings while shopping is imperative as well. You’ll want to determine if someone is following you or keeping tabs on what you are purchasing. Contact store management or security if you feel uncomfortable. This will usually scare away anyone with bad intent. You can even ask for an escort to your car if you are alone. Try to bring a small cross-body purse that is easy to keep close to your body. A large over-the-shoulder or handbag is easier for someone to grab and run away with. Never put your purse in a shopping cart! Again, those looking to steal will go after the easiest items. Make it difficult for anyone to rob you.
Paying Smarts
While waiting to pay, keep your credit card inside your purse or wallet until the clerk asks for it. Always put it back where it goes rather than throwing it in the top of your bag or in your pocket. Sticking to one payment type, debit or credit card rather than cash, also makes it less likely to misplace a card or have it stolen. If you have more shopping to do, check with the store about picking up your packages later in the day.
We at Cultris Security hope these Holiday Shopping Tips are helpful and wish you and yours a Safe Holiday Season!
