Check Those Batteries & Other Springtime Tasks

March 12 is National Check Your Batteries Day and coincides with the “Change your Clocks, Change your Batteries” campaign. Both are inspired by the onset of Daylight Savings Time in early March and are great reminders to keep your smoke detectors running smoothly by changing out the batteries and testing and cleaning your system.

Spring Forward

The second Sunday of March each year is when folks in most US states turn their clocks forward an hour. While you change your clocks, takethe opportunity to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Most of these devices should have their batteries changed out annually and should be replaced altogether every ten years.

Spring Cleaning

The longer days and extra sunlight after Daylight Savings Time hits, gives you time to take care of some extra cleaning chores as well. While you change out the batteries, it’s also a great idea to clean up those smoke detectors too. Read our previous blog post about how to take care of this.

Test It Out

Another item on your spring to-do list is to test your fire and security systems. How you test your systems depend on what kind of devices you have. Some have a button on them that you push to set it off. Others require a magnet placed up against it to run the test – these will have instructions of where to place the magnet. If your detectors are tied in to your alarm system, you can silence and reset the system through your keypad. Standalone detectors will silence themselves after a short period.

Make sure to contact your alarm company and put the system on Test so you don’t get charged for a false alarm!
