6 Tips to Enhance Warehouse Security

A commercial warehouse isn’t an easy target for criminals. But, burglars gain big rewards if they get away with burglarizing it. They may be after consumer products stored there or the machinery and equipment used to run the facility, Either way, criminals find warehouse content very desirable.

How can you improve the security of your warehouse?

Fence the Perimeter

At a minimum, consider installing a fence around the perimeter of your warehouse. This will help to deter burglars, vandals and those who may be scoping out your building. Make sure it is high enough so that it can’t be easily climbed. And check it regularly for holes or openings.

Control Gate Access

In addition to setting up a fenced perimeter, you should also install a gate with access control systems. Prevent unauthorized access with a card reader with access cards or fobs for all employees. Use an armed guard or phone entry system to confirm the identity of any visitors who need to come on site.

Manage Entry Doors

Fire code requires a certain number of unlocked doors to be used for evacuation as needed. But that doesn’t mean the doors have to be unlocked from the outside. Have the fewest number of entry points as is feasible based on the size of your facility and the number of employees. Require card access through these doors and an electronic sign-in and badging process for visitors.

Install a Monitored Security System

Even with fencing, gate and door access, a committed thief can still get on premise after hours. Install a security system and have it monitored so the police can be alerted if there is a break in. Also put sensors on all of the doors and any windows that could be used for entry. Protect overhead doors as well – these are often overlooked. Use photoelectric beams outside the building.  These will catch people who come on the property in off hours before they can even make it inside.

Add Video Surveillance

Installing a video surveillance system is a good strategy for preventing burglary at your warehouse. Just the sight of a video camera is often enough to deter a would-be burglar.

If someone does steal property from your warehouse, it may be far easier to identify and catch them if you get it on camera. Video verification monitoring can be tied in to your intrusion alarm. When an alarm goes off, the monitoring station can check the cameras. They may be able to catch the criminal in the act. They also can give a description of the location on property they are and what they look like. This will help the police find them when they arrive.

Use Manned Security Patrols

If you have the money and resources, hire security personnel to patrol your warehouse. Security officers will typically patrol the grounds at night when workers are away, which can be a powerful deterrent. In addition, they can take action if a crime is in progress that they discover or if the alarm goes off.
