Security Measures at Work

With so many people in one place, a workplace can be an easy target for thieves, vandals and other criminals. Taking a few security measures can increase safety for everyone and deter criminal activity.

Common Sense Precautions

If you know a majority of people at your company or in your building, you may not take common sense precautions to secure your property. Your personal belongings should be in a locked drawer or secure locker area. The few minutes it takes to walk around the corner to speak with a coworker is enough time for someone to grab your purse or briefcase off your desk. It may be a nuisance to always lock up before you walk away, but it’s a good habit to prevent becoming a victim.

Trusting your instincts if you are alone in the building is another example of common sense precaution. If you feel like something is off, it probably is. You may want to lock the restroom or your office door if you see a stranger lurking in the hallway. Ask a colleague to walk to the garage together if it’s dark when you leave for the day. Keeping your personal safety in mind, rather than dismissing any worries, can help you stay safe in a sketchy situation.

Lighting and Locks

Business owners should work with their property managers to ensure that access to the building is controlled with access cards or apps. Doors and windows are locked after hours, with only authorized parties allowed to enter the premises. Additionally, the building’s public areas, the parking garage and any stairways should be well-lit.

Security System

Your building and your company’s offices should have some sort of security system. This could be a local system that sounds an alarm when doors are opened without proper access. Ideally, the system should be monitored by a service that will alert you or the building manager as well as send fire or police as needed.
With either of these types of systems, security cameras can play an important role too. Reviewing footage can help track down stolen property or even identify a suspect for many types of crimes.
