Security System Basics

We discuss a variety of security and safety topics in this blog, but let’s back up and go over some security system basics.

Most security systems have multiple components that connect to a main base station, which then links up with a mobile app.  Usually, these systems use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or cellular connections to talk to our phones. Some might also have a backup plan with a landline or batteries in case the power goes out.

The base station communicates with a monitoring company that can contact the police, EMS and fire if your system is set up to do that. Make sure to always put your system on Test when testing or making changes. This will prevent the monitoring company from sending help if the alarm is triggered.

Security System Components:

Base Station: This is like the central hub that connects all the parts of our security system together.

Entry Sensor: These are door and window alarms. They indicate if someone opens a door or window when they shouldn’t.

Siren: This is like a loud alarm that goes off to scare away intruders or let neighbors know something’s wrong.

Motion Sensor: These are like smart guards that detect movement if someone is moving around in our home. Some are smart enough not to be triggered by pets.

Glass Break Sensor: These are like smart ears that listen for the sound of breaking glass, which could mean someone is trying to break in.

Smoke and CO Detectors: These are important for detecting fires or dangerous gases in our home.

Security Camera: These are like smart eyes that connect to the internet, so you can see what’s happening at home from our phone. You can have a professional monitoring company watch the footage in real-time. This third party receives alerts about events at your location and can dispatch the police or fire department if necessary. You can designate certain activities for monitoring, such as someone on the porch or in the backyard, at specific times and schedules.

Keypad: This is like a security code lock. We use it to turn the security system on or off.

Key Fob: This is like a remote control for our security system.

Panic Button: This is like a quick way to call for help in an emergency. We can press it to alert the police or fire department.

Yard Sign and Window Stickers: These warnings signal to burglars that our home is protected, potentially causing them to reconsider attempting a break-in.
