QR Code Scams on the Rise

QR codes are everywhere these days, from restaurant menus to advertisements. They offer a quick way to access information by scanning them with a smartphone. However, cybercriminals keep finding new ways to exploit QR codes for malicious purposes, and these QR code scams are on the rise. What is QR Code Phishing?

QR code phishing, or “quishing,” involves scammers creating fake QR codes that lead to fraudulent websites. These sites aim to steal your personal information, such as credit/debit card numbers or site login credentials.

How QR Code Phishing Scams Work

1. Creating Fake QR Codes: Scammers generate QR codes that link to phishing websites. These sites often look like legitimate ones, such as banking or social media pages, to trick you into entering your information. They may also include links to computer intrusion software that can alter your phone and steal credentials. 
2. Spreading the QR Codes: Malicious QR codes can be placed on flyers, posters, emails or social media posts. Scammers might also replace real QR codes with their fake ones in public places, placing a sticker over the legitimate code. The newest scam involves sending an actual gift in the mail with no return address. The attached note has a QR code to scan to find out who the “gift” came from.
3. Scanning the QR Code: When you scan a malicious QR code, you are directed to a fake website. These sites use tricks to persuade you to enter your personal information.
4. Stealing Information: Once you enter your information on the fake website, the scammer collects it for identity theft, financial fraud or unauthorized account access.

How to Protect Yourself

1. Be Cautious with Unsolicited QR Codes: Avoid scanning QR codes from unknown sources, especially those received via mail, email, social media or unsolicited advertisements.
2. Check the Source: Verify the URL after scanning a QR code. Look for correct spelling, HTTPS encryption and familiar branding.
3. Use QR Code Scanning Apps Carefully: Some apps show a URL preview before visiting the site. Use these apps to check the URL for legitimacy.
4. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest phishing tactics and educate others about QR code phishing risks.
5. Secure Your Device: Keep your smartphone updated and use antivirus software to detect and prevent malicious activities.
