Protecting Yourself when Walking at Night

With daily heat advisories any kind of outdoor exercise is discouraged and risky. But for many who rely on walks to get their cardio in each week, the hot days present a real challenge. Walking at night is one alternative but there are a number of dangers that come with that. Crime is one consideration but even just the danger of being out on a dark road makes walking at night less than ideal.

The DOs of Walking at Night

  • Get a buddy. Have someone walk with you. It keeps you safer and also breaks up the monotony!
  • Walk close to home versus a park or other unpopulated area. Unless there is a walking trail nearby that stays crowded at all times, consider keeping the nightly stroll in the neighborhood.
  • Walk on the sidewalk if possible, or a well-lit street if not.
  • Walk against the flow of traffic so you are not caught off guard by an approaching car.
  • Wear bright colors or carry a light to ensure you are seen. A headlamp helps you see the road ahead to avoid tripping or cracks in the road.
  • Use an app that tracks you so your location is known.
  • Be sure a family member or friend knows when you left for your walk and when you expect to be back.

The Don’ts of Walking at Night

  • Don’t wing it. Have a plan and know the route you are taking. Go somewhere familiar without any construction or other surprises.
  • Don’t be distracted. Listening to music is helpful on a walk, but be sure you can hear approaching cars and are fully aware of your surroundings.
  • Don’t panic. If you find yourself lost or think someone is following you, remain calm. Confidence is a deterrent for criminals. Call for someone to pick you up if needed or go into a shop or knock on a neighbor’s door.
  • Don’t walk when you are most vulnerable.  Whether you are walking home from a party or getting some fresh air after a stressful day, don’t let your guard down. If you have been drinking and decide to walk home, reconsider. Get a ride or call an Uber or find someone to walk with you.

Whether walking for fun or exercise or because it is the way you get home from work or other activities, doing it at night presents different challenges. In addition to the dos and don’ts above, trusting your instincts is an important weapon in your arsenal. Keeping situational awareness top of mind and taking extra steps to be sure you are seen and safe are key.
