Protect Those Packages!
Every year as holiday shopping and gift-buying kick into gear, there are stories of packages being stolen from someone’s porch. “Porch Pirates are at it again!” We’ve written about it in prior blog posts and have a few new ideas to help you protect those packages.
Some of the ways we’ve mentioned include specifying a date and time for delivery for when you’ll be home. Or team up with a neighbor to check each other’s porches for packages to rescue. Another option is having packages delivered to a nearby post office or Amazon Hub. And of course, having good lighting and monitored security cameras go a long way to possibly prevent thieves from targeting your house.
Pay for Protection
Other options include paying for a package receiving service. These are businesses that offer to receive your packages and hold on to them until you can retrieve them. You could also purchase a large, lockable package receptacle for your porch. Some can be controlled with an app while others require the delivery service to lock up once packages are delivered. Either way these boxes are not foolproof, though they do provide an added layer of protection. Anything that hinders a would-be thief, lessens the chances of your items being stolen.
Alternate Delivery Options
A couple of other ideas that don’t involve a fee include having packages delivered to your place of work, if allowable. Even just requiring a signature for delivery can reduce the amount of time a delivery is left sitting on your doorstep.
Last Resort
If none of these options work for you, perhaps adding something to hide packages behind would work. A nice, big potted plant or outdoor bench could hide items that have been placed on your porch. If packages can’t be seen from the street, the likelihood that someone will steal them is lessened considerably.
