crime prevention month

October is Crime Prevention Month

In 1984 President Reagan designated October as National Crime Prevention Month in the United States. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) partners with local police, government agencies, schools, businesses and other organizations to raise awareness. You may remember McGruff the Crime Dog teaching “take a bite out of crime” by taking simple measures to help prevent crime in your neighborhood. Here are a some tips to help you do so!

  • Secure Your Home.

    • Lock your doors, leave the lights on when away from home and let neighbors know when you go on vacation. Discourage criminal activity by removing temptations.
  • Help create a tight-knit neighborhood and a sense of community.

    • Neighbors that feel like friends look out for each other. This can be done by simply saying hi and chatting when you see your neighbors, or offering to bring in someone’s mail while they are gone. Invite neighbors to hang out in your front yard on National Night Out, coming up on October 3rd!
  • Join or create a Neighborhood Watch program.

    • Neighborhood watch groups benefit the community in several ways. From on-going communication with local law enforcement, to encouraging vigilance and cooperation from neighbors to recognize and report suspicious activity. Nosy neighbors are incredibly discouraging to would-be burglars.
  • Encourage children and teens to protect themselves.

    • Let families know about local programs for kids. Offer to help parents that are feeling overwhelmed. Kids that feel loved and secure are more insulated from substance abuse, bullies and gang violence.
