Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is coming up in May to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote the importance of taking care of your mental health. Established in 1949 by Mental Health America, it has grown into a global movement for mental health advocacy.

Throughout the month, mental health organizations, advocacy groups and others work together to promote mental health education, offer resources and support, and advocate for policy changes to improve mental health services and access to care. Some of the events offered may include free mental health screenings, educational workshops, social media campaigns, fundraising events, and more.

Some of the best advice is around self-care to enhance your mental health. Individuals may have their own preferences in taking care of themselves, but self-care can look like the following examples.

  1. Engaging in feel-good activities such as exercise, hobbies, spending time in nature or listening to music.
  2. Getting enough sleep on a consistent schedule.
  3. Eating a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains.
  4. Using stress-reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga.
  5. Spending time with friends and family or joining a support group.
  6. Focusing on the good things in your life and expressing gratitude!
  7. Seeking help from a mental health professional if needed. Therapy and/or medication are some tools to try.
