Make Nightly Home Safety a Habit
According to the Harvard Business Review, a routine is not the same as a habit. You can turn a routine into a habit. But it is important to pick wisely those behaviors you want to turn into a habit. Establishing a habit requires some attention and concentration, and is not as simple as some would make it out to be. So when it comes to the routine of locking up and locking down the house each evening, consistency and focus are great habit-building steps.
Set a certain time each evening – like 9:00 pm – as your daily safety checkpoint. That way, with a 9 PM routine, you can rest easy each night knowing the doors are locked and alarm is set. Once you have diligently been doing this at the same time from night to night, you will establish a habit that becomes second nature. Where better to create habits but for the safety and security of your home and family?
The 9 PM Routine Safety Check
While everyone’s list of nightly events may be different, here are some basic guidelines to follow:
- Lock all doors
- Pull cars into the garage and close the overhead garage door
- Turn on outside lights
- For cars not in the garage, lock all doors and be sure there are no valuables left inside
- Close and lock any gates
- Bring toys and bikes and any tools or other enticements inside
- Check app for camera system or doorbell camera to be sure all cameras are online
- Close any windows opened during the day and pull the curtains or blinds
- Blow out candles and confirm the oven and stove are off
- Set the alarm
