Long-Weekend Plans?
Many of us have a long weekend coming up with Good Friday and/or Easter Monday holidays for work or school. These long weekends offer a great opportunity to plan a quick trip away. Planning a weekend getaway is exciting, but before you hit the road, it’s essential to ensure that your home is secure while you’re away. Taking a few simple precautions can help give you peace of mind during your long-weekend plans and protect your property from potential intruders.
First and foremost, make sure all doors and windows are securely locked before you leave. This includes not only the front and back doors but also any windows, sliding doors, or garage doors. Consider installing deadbolts or security bars for an extra layer of protection.
If you have a spare key hidden outside, remove it before you go. Instead, leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor, friend or family member who can check on your home while you’re away. Even better would be to install a smart-lock or camera that you can control through wifi.
Another important step is to make your home appear occupied. Use timers to turn lights on and off at different times throughout the day and night. You can also set timers for radios or televisions to create noise and make it seem like someone is home.
Avoid posting about your trip on social media until after you return. Broadcasting your plans online can alert potential burglars that your home will be empty, making it an easy target. Save the vacation photos and updates for when you’re back home.
Consider investing in a home security system or surveillance cameras for added protection. Many modern systems allow you to monitor your home remotely via smartphone apps, so you can keep an eye on things even while you’re away.
Arrange to have someone collect your mail and any packages that arrive while you are gone. A buildup of mail or packages is a telltale sign that no one is home.
Finally, notify a trusted neighbor or neighborhood watch group that you’ll be away. They can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and alert authorities if necessary.
By taking these simple precautions before your long-weekend plans, you can help ensure that your home stays safe and secure in your absence. With a little planning and foresight, you can enjoy your trip without worrying about what’s happening back home.
