Labor Day Plans? Follow these Safety Tips

For most of us the Labor Day holiday is a time for relaxation and enjoying the last bit of summer. If you have fun Labor Day plans, follow these safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Water Safety:

    • If you’re going to be near water, ensure that everyone knows how to swim.
    • Use life jackets or personal flotation devices, especially for inexperienced swimmers and children.
    • Always supervise children when they’re in or around water.
    • Avoid alcohol consumption when swimming or boating.

Grilling and Food Safety:

    • Place the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, away from any flammable objects or structures.
    • Keep children and pets away from the grill area and never leave the grill unattended while it’s in use.
    • Use long-handled tools to avoid burns, and wear heat-resistant mitts.
    • Keep perishable foods in a cooler with ice packs to prevent spoilage.

Sun and Heat Protection:

    • Wear sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
    • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.
    • Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes and face.
    • Limit your time outdoors, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
    • If you need to be outside, try to stay in shaded areas as much as possible.
    • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing that allows your body to breathe and helps in the evaporation of sweat.

Travel Safety:

    • If you’re traveling, ensure your vehicle is in good condition before hitting the road.
    • Follow all traffic laws and wear seatbelts at all times.
    • Avoid distractions while driving, such as texting or using your phone.
    • If you’re bringing your pets along, make sure they are properly restrained while traveling and have access to water and shade. Be mindful of their comfort and safety, especially in hot weather.

Remember that safety is a priority during any holiday celebration. By following these tips, you can enjoy a fun and worry-free Labor Day weekend.
