not-so-scary Halloween

Have A Not-So-Scary Halloween!

Halloween is an exciting time for kids and adults alike, filled with costumes, candy and spooky fun. While it’s a night for ghosts and ghouls, it’s essential to keep safety in mind. Here are some tips to ensure a not-so-scary Halloween!

Stay Visible:

When choosing a costume, opt for bright colors or add reflective tape to make your kids more visible in the dark. Have them carry a flashlight or glow sticks to stay visible to drivers.

Safe Costumes:

Make sure costumes fit well and don’t obstruct your child’s vision. Avoid masks that make it hard to see or breathe. Instead, consider using face paint or makeup as safer alternatives.

Trick-or-Treating:

Kids should always go trick-or-treating with a responsible adult or in a group if they’re old enough. They should stick to well-lit areas and use sidewalks where possible. Remind them to look both ways before crossing the street and only cross at designated crossings.

Inspect Treats:

Before eating any treats, make sure to inspect them. Only let kids consume wrapped candies and avoid homemade treats from strangers. If anything looks suspicious or tampered with, it’s better to be safe than sorry—throw it away.

Caution with Decorations:

Be mindful of decorations, especially open flames like candles in jack-o’-lanterns. Keep costumes and trick-or-treat bags away from open flames to prevent accidents. Also, watch out for tripping hazards such as extension cords and decorations on walkways.

Pet Safety:

If you have pets, ensure they’re safely secured indoors during the Halloween festivities. The noise and excitement can be stressful for animals, and some Halloween treats can be harmful to them.

Be Respectful:

Remember to respect other people’s properties. Only visit houses with porch lights on and avoid entering homes of strangers. Teach your kids to always say thank you and be polite during trick-or-treating adventures.

Emergency Preparedness:

Make sure to have a plan in case of an emergency. Keep a list of important phone numbers handy and know where the nearest emergency services are located. Also, be aware of any allergies or medical conditions of those in your group. Have your older kids carry their cellphones if they are out in a group without an adult.

By following these simple safety tips, you and your kids can enjoy a spooktacular Halloween without any unnecessary scares. Have a happy and safe Halloween!
