Getting Stolen Goods Back after a Burglary

Most burglars steal with the intent of reselling the owner’s property for cash. This is why electronics, firearms, jewelry and similar items are among the most commonly stolen items. While recovery of stolen goods is challenging, these tips will help improve the odds if you are the victim of a burglary.

Keep Records and Photos of Property

Maintain good records. Many of us throw away receipts and warranty information once we purchase something. We assume that since the product is in our possession, there’s no need to keep records.

It’s not until our home is targeted by a burglar when we realize the importance of proper documentation. Photos or videos of your property, along with receipts and serial numbers should be kept somewhere safe. If something does happen, you can provide all of this information to the police. They can then use it to cross-reference items they recover when they come across burglary suspects. This is also helpful information to have for an insurance claim you may file.

Make Identifying Marks on Items

Consider carving your initials or some other identifying mark on wood, plastic and metal items. For leather and soft items, use a permanent marker. Take photos of the marks. If your items are recovered, there will be less question that you are the rightful owner. This may also deter the burglar from taking the items, since any buyer will know the items were stolen.

Check Local Pawn Shops

Burglars often sell stolen property at pawn shops, usually very soon after they steal them. Pawn shops typically have a strict policy forbidding customers from selling or pawning stolen goods, but it happens. Check the local pawn shops to see if your items have been sold. If you discover any of your stolen items, alert the shop and then enlist the police department’s help.

Review Online Auction and Classified Sites

In addition to pawn shops, burglars sell stolen goods online, posting listings on online marketplaces or Craigslist. Check online for your items, filtering results to local listings within your area.  If you come across one of your items, notify the police so they can deal with the perpetrator.
