Garden Safely in the Summer Heat
As the intense summer heat continues and our lawns and plants look sadder and sadder, prioritize your health when working in the yard this summer. Follow these essential guidelines to garden safely in the summer heat:
- Stay hydrated to help keep yourself cool. Bring a water bottle outside with you to serve as a reminder to drink enough water.
- Take regular breaks to rejuvenate. Whenever possible, seek out shady spots to rest or sneak inside for a few minutes to cool off.
- Use sunscreen to avoid sunburns and skin damage. There are so many choices of types of sunscreen. You could try spray on, thick lotion, dry touch or even gel. Make sure to apply anywhere exposed to the sun. Don’t forget the back of your neck and ears!
- Stay as cool as possible. Choose to wear loose, breathable fabrics to keep you comfortable and protected that let you garden safely in the summer heat.
- Sunglasses and hats provide another layer of protection. You can find lightweight sunglasses that stay on during your activities. They won’t slip even if you are sweaty or drop your head down to check out a new weed. Make sure to purchase the kind that effectively block ultraviolet rays to avoid damaging your eyes.
- Schedule gardening activities early in the morning or during the early evening. This should help to avoid the sweltering heat of mid-day. And take advantage of how the shade moves during the day by planning to work in an area while it is shaded.
Lastly, know when to stop! During this season of high temperatures and lack of rain, there may be only so much that can be done each day.
