Apps to Keep College Students Safe on Campus
You’d be hard-pressed these days to find a college student without a smartphone. Technology has become an invaluable tool for connecting folks with the resources they need. Specifically, apps are available to help college students stay safe on campus.
Noonlight (formerly SafeTrek)
Noonlight is great for students walking alone. If they feel uncomfortable, they just hold down the safe button within the app. Once they feel safe again, they release the button and simply enter their unique four-digit pin to let the police know a dispatch is not needed.
However, if emergency assistance IS needed, they would release the button and not enter their pin, the app then dispatches the police to their location, which they can pinpoint from the app’s GPS.
Noonlight can also be used to create a Safety Network with friends, keep a timeline of your activity and connect to other apps and devices for additional help during an emergency.
BSafe
BSafe allows students to set up a network of contacts and quickly connect with them if needed. Users can share their location and request a friend to walk home with them.
Also, if a student finds themselves in a dangerous situation, the Guardian Alert button lets their contacts know they need help.
BSafe includes:
- A voice-activated siren to use in an emergency, that also begins audio and video recording.
- An alert that lets their contacts know if they haven’t arrived at their destination.
- A fake call feature that “calls” their phone.
MobilePatrol
MobilePatrol allows students to receive updated information from public safety and law enforcement agencies nationwide. Users enter a zip code, and MobilePatrol alerts them to crime, weather and other alerts in their area.
In addition, they can report crime or other information that may be useful to help keep other students safe on campus.
Watch Over Me
Watch Over Me tracks a student’s journey via GPS for a specified period of time. Emergency contacts are notified if the student doesn’t check in to the app during that time.
Significantly, vigorously shaking the phone triggers the emergency alarm function. This is much easier in a stressful situation to do than finding an alarm button within an app on the phone. Lastly, the app can also send text alerts when the user is entering a high-crime area.
Individual School Apps
Several colleges have developed apps to keep students safe on campus. These apps connect students with emergency contact numbers, campus maps and support services.
