Spring Home Security Checklist

Spring Home Security Checklist

As we “spring forward” and adjust our clocks for daylight saving time, it’s the perfect reminder to refresh and reevaluate your home security. Longer days and warmer weather bring new opportunities—but also new risks. Use this spring home security checklist to ensure your home stays safe and secure.

1. Check and Upgrade Your Locks

Winter weather can take a toll on locks and deadbolts. Inspect all entry points, including doors, windows and garage locks. If they are loose or worn, replace them with high-security options. Consider upgrading to smart locks for added convenience and control.

2. Test Your Security System

If you have a home security system, now is the time to test it. Check that cameras are functioning, motion sensors are properly aligned and alarms are responsive. Update security codes and ensure all users have access to the latest settings.

3. Inspect Outdoor Lighting

With longer daylight hours, it’s easy to forget about outdoor lighting, but proper illumination is still a key deterrent for burglars. Check and replace burned-out bulbs, add motion-sensor lights near entry points and consider smart lighting that adjusts automatically.

4. Assess Your Landscaping

Spring growth can create hiding spots for intruders. Trim overgrown bushes, trees and hedges—especially around windows and doors. Keep your yard well-maintained to eliminate places where burglars could stay out of sight.

5. Secure Your Garage and Sheds

Your garage and outdoor storage areas often contain valuable tools and equipment. Make sure doors and windows are locked, and consider adding a smart garage door opener that alerts you if it’s left open.

6. Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Daylight saving time is a great cue to test and replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These small devices play a crucial role in keeping your family safe.

7. Review Your Emergency Plan

Spring weather can bring storms, so ensure your family is prepared. Review your emergency escape plan, update your emergency contacts and restock emergency kits with essentials like flashlights, batteries and first-aid supplies.

8. Evaluate Smart Home Security Features

Technology is always evolving. Take a moment to update security apps, change passwords and ensure all devices are running the latest software. If you haven’t already, consider adding security cameras and video monitoring service for extra layers of protection.

9. Protect Against Package Theft

With online shopping more popular than ever, porch piracy remains a concern. Install a secure package drop box, use smart delivery alerts or request deliveries to a secure location.

10. Perform a General Home Safety Sweep

Finally, take a walk around your property. Look for potential vulnerabilities, such as broken fences, faulty locks or easy-access windows. Address any security gaps before they become an issue.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about making sure your home is safe, secure and ready for the season ahead. By following this checklist, you’ll enjoy peace of mind and a fresh start for spring.
