With Daylight Savings Time (DST) ending this weekend, it’s a time to adjust more than just your clocks. This is a perfect opportunity to ensure that your security systems are functioning effectively. Here’s a simple DST checklist for your intrusion & fire system when it’s time to “fall back.”
1. Update Clocks
- Intrusion Systems: Many intrusion and fire systems rely on accurate time settings, especially those that are connected to emergency response systems. Verify the time on your alarm panel and reset it if necessary.
- Smart Devices: If your smoke or CO2 detectors are part of a smart home system, ensure all clocks are synchronized to avoid false alarms or delays.
2. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Press the test button on each detector to make sure they’re functioning properly.
- Replace any batteries if you hear chirping sounds, indicating low power.
3. Check the Batteries
- Replace the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors and alarm panels. Most battery-powered devices should have their batteries changed at least twice a year, and DST is a great reminder to do so.
- For hardwired systems, replace the backup batteries, so they’re ready if you lose power.
4. Inspect the Sensors and Detectors
- Clean any dust or debris from smoke detectors and sensors. Buildup can prevent the system from working as intended.
- Ensure all sensors are free from obstruction, particularly motion sensors that are part of security systems.
5. Update Emergency Contacts
- Verify that your security company has your current emergency contacts. Also, ensure family members know how to operate the system in case of an emergency.
6. Review Codes and Access
- If necessary, change alarm codes to ensure security, especially if you’ve shared it with temporary visitors in the past.
7. Confirm Remote Access (if applicable)
- If you have a smart system with app access, check that everything is connected and accessible. Update apps and software to avoid glitches.
This small amount of maintenance can go a long way in ensuring your home or office is protected as the seasons change. Taking time when you “fall back” can help keep your intrusion and fire system running efficiently and your household safe.
