Winter Fire Risks

Winter Fire Risks

Winter in Texas can mean having temperatures in the teens one day and in the seventies the next. When it warms up and the AC is needed, we may forget about the winter fire risks that using a heater or fireplace can bring. With this in mind, here are some safety tips to use, not only at the start of winter, but throughout the season as well.

Maintenance Is Key

Keeping your equipment clean and in good condition can prevent potential hazards. One way to do this is to hire a professional each year to clean and inspect your chimney, fireplace and heater. Make any needed repairs before cold temperatures arrive. Additionally, furnace filters should be changed out regularly to keep the system in top shape. And before you light a fire in the fireplace, clean out the ashes and debris from the last fire.

Precautions Rule

Keep any flammable items away from your fireplace and space heaters, and never leave them unattended. Outlets should have only one heat-producing appliance plugged in at a time.  Make sure to use only appropriate firewood (no household items) for indoor fires. Burning the wrong thing could create too much smoke or even noxious fumes. If you lose electricity and start up a generator, make sure it is outside and as far away from your home as possible.

Equipment Counts

Use a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into your house from the fireplace and have appropriate fireplace tools on hand. Make sure to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly. And keep a fire extinguisher nearby, which can save the day if something goes wrong!
