Business Security Myths

Security should be a top priority for all business owners. Don’t fall victim to these common business security myths when planning your business security.

My Business Isn’t Vulnerable to Theft

Think your business is safe from theft? Think again. All businesses are susceptible to theft. Retailers alone report billions of dollars of stolen goods each year. From restaurants to manufacturing facilities, construction sites to call centers, theft occurs everywhere.

In addition to theft, businesses are vulnerable to vandalism like broken windows, graffiti or equipment being used for “joy-riding” or other unlawful use. Not only can a good security system prevent vandals from entering the premises, but it can also help in apprehending the perpetrators if something does occur. Surveillance cameras can record and store the happenings in and around your facility.

Only Shoppers or Visitors Steal

Unfortunately, the majority of commercial theft actually involves employees. The website StatisticsBrain reports that nearly one in three business bankruptcies are caused by employee theft. The website reveals that 75% of employees admit to stealing from an employer.

This particular myth may cause a business owner to focus on the wrong thing. In addition to burglary prevention, it’s a good idea to install cameras for surveillance and monitoringof employees as well.

Another consideration is traffic from vendors, contractors and delivery drivers frequently entering your business. Click to read a previous post for more tips on reducing theft in facilities that have rotating personnel.

Insurance Will Cover Losses

Don’t assume your business insurance will cover the losses of theft. While it’s true that a good insurance policy should cover the majority of stolen items, there are things that it cannot replace. If a burglar breaks in and steals a laptop containing sensitive customer information, you won’t be able to recover this through an insurance claim.

Missing equipment can cause a drop in productivity if employees are unable to do their jobs without the stolen items. Another loss may include the sense of safety your employees enjoyed as well. Preventing a burglary in the first place will help to maintain that peace of mind.

Security Systems Are Too Expensive

Installing an alarm system in a commercial business may require an initial investment. Think of it as just that: an investment. A burglary can cost you a lot more than the amount you would have spent on an intrusion detection system. The risk of being burglarized is lowered just by having an alarm system. Some studies show that businesses with alarm systems are three times less likely to be burglarized.

Additionally, many insurance companies will offer discounts on annual premiums simply for having an alarm system. Besides that, the price of peace of mind is hard to quantify.

Security Systems Don’t Deter Thieves

Criminals look for easy targets. They want to get in and get out. They’ll observe your business to see if you have an access control system and how employees enter and exit. They will also look for security equipment. If they see security cameras, alarm sensors or doors locked with access control panels, they are likely to move on and keep looking for an easier target.

Also, a sign displaying the alarm system name is an additional deterrent. They will move on to somewhere less secure where the chances of being caught on video or apprehended are lower. This is not good news for less secure facilities or even those that just look less secure. Once you’ve installed a security system, make sure to “market” your facility as such.

Security Systems Are Difficult to Use

Some older alarm systems were relatively complicated and difficult to use. This restricted their effectiveness in commercial settings. The hassle of false alarms was more common, which can incur fees if the police are called too many times. Modern-day alarm systems have been designed with an emphasis on simplicity and ease of use.

Touchscreen keypads are the norm now. Many systems even use a hand-held tablet-like keypad. Your smart phone can be used control some newer systems. These perks are not only easy to use but cost effective as well. Lastly, with the use of cellular and z-wave technology, even power outages don’t affect systems like they used to.
